Reflections on Vienna

Austria: August 8 - August 10, 2006

We were in Vienna for about 2 1/2 days. Hmmm, I'm not sure what to say because I feel like I already said everything in my descriptions of my pictures on Flickr. Well, I thought that Vienna was really cool and I'm excited to go back sometime. But at the same time I was a little disappointed. It was like one of those things that you hear so much about, the history, the culture, the home of great composers, that I guess it was too hard to live up to. The Old Town of course was great, but it doesn't really stand out from other Old Towns I've seen. And we stayed in a newer part of the city that could have been any city with a significant number of people in any country.
Naturally, there were a lot of cool things, like seeing the sarcophagi of the royal family in Kapuziner Kirche and eating cake at Damel's restaurant where kings and president's have eaten. It's just not what I imagined. I suppose I can't really explain well why I was so disappointed. Maybe it was just that point in the trip where I was tired and palaces and 500 year old cobbled streets were no longer new to me.
Although, one thing that was really cool (and would have been even cooler if I had been awake the whole time) was seeing Schonbrunn Palace. The other palaces we saw (there are actually several in the vicinity of Vienna) were fantastic, but nothing quite compared to Schonbrunn. Professor Lazda told us it is the most opulent palace in Europe outside of Versailles. I wish we could have taken pictures inside but I got a lot of good pictures outside and I have a pretty good memory.
I think I have to go back again to Vienna to get another feel for the city. I don't feel like I got a fair impression of it. The whole time we were there, I could not remember which city we were in. It deserves better than that.
